Synopsis In his mountaintop village in southern Spain, Pablo's entire life seems planned out for him--his place, his vocation, his future. When family tragedy catapults him into an unconventional journey of self-discovery, everything he holds true is called into question. His hopes and dreams. His doubts and fears. His faith in something greater, and his belief in himself. With the help of an unlikely ally, Pablo soon finds that the profound transformation of his inner world leads to dramatic changes on the outside as well.

"In the tradition of Coelho, García Márquez and Allende...beautifully written."
- Rosemary Noble (Goodreads)

Excerpts
"Though ostensibly singing the lyrics to the song, it was his own story to which Pablo gave voice. The deep well from which he drew the profound feelings expressed through the music was his own experience. Fire. Death. Silence. Relationships ended and new ones begun, including with himself. So much in so little time. It still didn't seem real, and it still wasn't over, evolving so fast he could hardly keep up."

"I mean that instead of allowing yourself to slowly become more attuned to your inner voice, you've turned it into some sort of intellectual challenge, something to get a hold on by working hard enough at it, a puzzle to figure out. But that's not how it works. It's experiencing the mystery, opening yourself to how it feels. It's immersing yourself in the subtleties and nuances as it rattles your bones or whispers in your ear. It's not thinking, but feeling."

A Voice Beyond Reason Matthew Félix 9780997761955 Books

I seldom read books for pleasure, so let me start by sharing some of the reasons WHY this novel was an exception for me:
1) I’ve read a number of the author’s blogs, as well as a few of his travel videos. Some were hysterical and all were interesting or entertaining.
2) Felix’s book of short stories of Morocco was mental candy, i.e., good for the body, mind and spirit.
3) The premise of this book is near and dear to my heart. The struggle to follow one’s intuition instead of riding the wave of family and friends’ expectations (OR following the path of least resistance) is a real challenge. IMO, however, awareness of everyday synchronicity and trusting our gut is an opportunity for personal growth and satisfaction.
There were sections of the book that made it darned near impossible to set it down; two particular sections come to mind as causing me to “chomp at the bit” to find out what would happen next and question why I spend so much time working instead of reading. Was Pablo going to follow his heart in romance? Would he listen to sage advice about other areas of life or follow the road most traveled? Did he see things the way I was seeing them? Dang it, Pablo, are you going to listen to me, the reader, or will you pass up the chance for joy beyond imagination just because it seems so darned risky? Read the book to find out for yourself!
Since I’m one of those individuals who cannot visualize images mentally—it was difficult for me to appreciate the beautifully-phrased similes in the book. But I’m betting that the majority of readers who can conjure up a picture in their mind will be VERY happy about the author’s precision with words.

P.S. If you’re reading this review, Mr. Felix, I’d like to put in a plug for a wee bit more of the “hanging on the edge of my seat” action in your next book. And THANK YOU for writing a book about intuitive gifts we all have and how easy it is to miss them.

A Voice Beyond Reason Matthew Félix 9780997761955 Books Reviews

My book discussion group (Chapter Two) is reading this book for our December discussion. Laura
Now for part two and three. Chapter Two had a book discussion in December. We were lucky enough to have the author at our discussion as he was in Dayton visiting family for Christmas. My sister had suggested the book and had met Matthew at a book signing.

Matthew was charming. He answered our general writing questions and then answered questions about "A Voice Beyond Reason." We enjoyed all the parts of the hour and a half we spent with Mathew. We all enjoyed the coming of age story. Having just been to Spain, I particularity enjoyed the small village Spanish setting and the historical content about the Islamic history.

I decided to collect the books to take to Florida for my Happy Hour book discussion group in Sanibel. We had our discussion last week. Everybody enjoyed the book. Vincent, Pablo's mentor in the story, was a character that we all liked. Most of the mother's in the group could relate to Pablo's mother and we could understand the girlfriends reaction to events. The only thing we might have liked a little more of was background on a couple of the characters. We agreed that when Mathew comes out with another novel, we'll read it. Nice Story!!, .
I really enjoyed this book! I was totally engaged and found myself reading beyond what I usually would. It was very easy to read, and I looked forward to what was coming next. I really liked the passages with examples about intuition and reason, because it made me think about my own life. I find myself paying attention to certain “gut feelings” that I have. Where I may have ignored them before, I no longer ignore them. I think that’s because of this book.

The ending made me look forward to finding out what happens next to Pablo, and I hope there will be another novel.
This book is a great read. It has the quality and clarity of a parable and relies heavily on nuanced illustrations of relationships; relationships between people, relationships between people and nature, between sometimes contradictory or at-odds parts of ourselves. The writing flows, it's a compelling story. And the descriptions of the natural world are exemplary. I felt as if I was in the physical environment surrounded by the sights, sounds, smells and mindsets of rural Spain. A very strong first novel by a talented writer and wonderful storyteller. I highly recommend this book.
With his first novel Felix has clearly captured the pulse of life in a Spanish village while following the maturing of his main character, Pablo. Post adolescence can be a challenging time for any individual as they explore the possibilities and challenges of becoming an adult. In addition to finding his path, Pablo is trying to understand his intuitive feelings that are pulling him from traditional village life. Felix provides Pablo with a knowing mentor who befriends Pablo while dispensing well earned wisdom. While taking the reader through Pablo's journey Felix also captures the natural surroundings with an adept pen. Throughout the story I found myself reflecting on decisions made throughout my lifetime, and could identify with Pablo's struggle for clarity. This story will entertain, but will also make you think.
"You can't create a new life while clinging to the one you want to leave behind." A major reality to be considered and owned for sure. This novel by Mattew Felix could hve been entitled "The Spanish Budda" or "The Adventures of Pablo", but it would not have been the focal point that "A Voice Beyond Reason" stated so clearly. Likewise, this novel could have been wrtten simply as a self-help intro to Zen or Self-Awareness or Overcoming Doubt, but it then would not have been so engaging and inspiring. On a personal note, one wise mentor of mine told me "If you need to make a decision, sit with it before acting on it. Imagine it coming true. Even if there will result chaos or hurt, does living with that decision bring you peace of mind? If not, it's not the right time to act on the decision or it may be the wrong decision." Fellix hits the nail on the head and in a very engaging fashion. I look forward to reading his next tale.
